Doomrider! Yeehah!

I don't care what Games Workshop says; Doomrider is still alive! He is screeching across the battlefield to the sound of Judas Priest, with his terrifying visage striking fear into his enemies. His bike leaps over buildings and he slays the lackeys of the False Emperor with his daemon sword. 

A classic metal model, formerly languishing in my bitz box, finally brought to life in glorious technicolour. Enjoy (but not too much, lest ye fall to Slaanesh!)

Well, this was fun! I always take a look at the aquarium scenery in the shops when I see some, just in case there's something that could work as 40k scenery. Most of the time, things are the wrong scale or lacking in detail, but this time I struck lucky. For just under £5, I got this cool looking crashed aircraft. I bought it on Saturday, and by Sunday afternoon, I had repainted it and added some Imperial iconography. Now it's on my battlefield, ready to be fought around! Keep an eye out, and you never know what you may find in the high street!

Skaven Verminlord!

I have a little tradition now, it seems. Once a year, I make a pilgramage to Warhammer World, and bring home with me one interesting large model to build and paint. First it was an Imperial Knight, and last time it was this Verminlord. There was a beautiful example in the Age of Sigmar exhibition hall, and I decided to give the model a go myself. 

There are lots of interesting things on this model. There are various textures, such as skin/hair/armour/metal and so on, and the colours i used are not ones I had used a lot in the past. I gave the metal a purple wash and mixed a bluey green for the armour. The tail was a pain too, since I had to highlight each individual ridge!

I took my time with it, leaving it for periods while working on other, easier models, before coming back to this when I fancied it. I repainted the skin at one point as the original skin was not smooth enough in terms of colour blend.

It came out well in the end, and now it can go and live in my display cabinet!

This super-freaky fellow is a Chaos Spawn, made from one of the Greater Possessed in the Shadowspear box.

Chaos Lord Veneror the Tainted

Ever since I saw the Legion Moritat model on the Forge World website, I knew I loved it. However, being the heretic I am, my first thought was that I could use this model in Heresy-era armour to create a Chaos model in a great pose. 

Combining the Moritat torso and legs with various other parts, I created this vision of a Chaos Lord. Most of my Chaos Lords are very close-combat oriented, so I went with a different feel on Veneror, giving him a combi-melta and a mutated arm, which could count as a power weapon, lightning claw, or something like that.  

The paint job was quite experimental, with a rakarth flesh base and purple wash, highlighted with white. Getting the wash to look right was quite tricky. It required a lot of manipulation with a wet brush to stop it pooling. I got there in the end though. 

Chaos Warhost Annual Review 2020

Last week you saw my review of my Imperial collection, and this week it's the turn of the Hordes of Chaos. Models I have completed this year include:

a Hellblade;

Black Legion cultists - I made a lot of these... a lot... most of them are converted and there are more to come. I love making cultists!;

a Helbrute;

Some characters, including a Lord of Khorne, two Nurgle characters, Doomrider, a Dark Apostle and a generic Chaos Lord;

a squad of Bloodletters, a squad of berzerkers and a squad of Chosen for The Bloodstorm;

some Khorngors

Angon - this Creature Caster model is absolutely superb and it was almost my model of the year!;

and my Lord of Skulls! This is easily my model of the year. I put so much work into it and it's received a lot of praise.

Imperial Warhost Annual Update 2020

Another new year, and another chance to review my collection of miniatures. I've built and painted a fair amount of stuff this year across all the different factions I collect, including the Imperium. Some Imperial units I've finished are: 

Black Templars Crusader squad and Captain;

two squads of Space Wolves, a Razorback and a Wolf Lord - there are more Space Wolves to come;

an entire Blood Angels army! This retro force came together in order to make use of a lot of slightly ropey looking 2nd ed monopose marines, but I really got into the retro feel, even searching out a special edition Captain and an OOP rhino to complete the look. I think the model I like the most is actually the Chaplain on bike. I don't have many Chaplains, that model had been gathering dust in a box for a while, and I did a good paintjob on it;

some Minotaurs. This project is my new favourite project, and I'm really enjoying the challenge of trying to do something I haven't done before with space marines. I'm trying to use units I've not used before and convert the models, and the army will eventually include a Thunderhawk. The Thunderhawk is in the building stage now. I painted some interior sections and have bought some tools to put it together, so it should progress nicely this year.

and of course, Roboute Guilliman! That was a great model to work on. I get highly motivated to paint big models and characters, and I had a lot of fun doing blending on his blue armour. 

I included the Valkyrie in the collection, as, although the Wings of Vrayax have seceded from the Imperium, the Valkyrie is technically an Imperial model and... well... it looks cool at the back there, doesn't it!

Space Wolf Long Fangs

More Space Wolves! This time, a squad of Long Fangs!

The marines with heavy weapons are classic metal long fangs and the sergeant (with the plasma gun) is made of modern plastic parts. It just sort of happened this way, but I like how the squad ended up with an old metal version and a new plastic version of each of the heavy bolter and missile launcher. It's like a history of space marine heavy weapons in one squad!

Warmachine Cryx

I have a good friend, Anthony, who got me into Warmachine a while back. Unfortunately, he moved away and I haven't played it since. I have, however, been working on the few models I bought, and here they are together. I found the Cryx faction most interesting, so I collected a few models from them. Here they are all together:

Warwitch Deneghra. This was the first time I used a contrast paint, on the white cloak. I didn't find it was better than my other painting methods, but it's certainly an interesting way to do white.
